“Right then, Mr Mandelson,” the television engineer said after connecting the new Set-Top box to Mike Mandelson’s broadband internet router. “Everything should be ready for you to watch the football.”

Not being able to stop the large grin on his lips, Mike pointed the remote control at the new box and turned it on from standby. The television screen flickered for a moment before the main menu from the box appeared on the screen.

“As well as the normal terrestrial and Sky TV channels, you have live and On-Demand football from all over the world,” said the engineer, pointing out the different features Mike could access on the remote control. “It’s like a football version of Netflix.” Mike didn’t know what the man meant, though nodding so not to give away his ignorance. “You can choose to watch any of the scheduled live matches from Europe and the Americas, just highlight the icon for the league you want and then select whichever live match you want to watch, and with the interactive feature you can even choose which camera you watch the match through.”

“Wow,” Mike said under his breath, causing the engineer to smile; he had heard others make the same exclamation when he showed them what this new television package had to offer.

“Every professional league is represented, and as most matches in the leagues are on the same day, you can go back and watch a replay of any match that has already happened; though the interactive feature is only available for live matches unfortunately.”

It still sounded amazing to Mike. With this he would be the envy of all his friends, and never miss a match of his favourite team, Manchester United. He had loved going to matches with his father and grandfather growing up in the 70’s, watching players like Jimmy Greenhoff, Gordon Hill and Stuart Pearson. When his family had moved to the Midlands just after he had finished high school because of his father’s job, his only chance to see his team was when the matches were shown on television, and then it was mainly just highlights on the Ten O’Clock News or Match of the Day.

“You can also watch all international team matches, and re-runs of classic English league matches from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s,” the engineer continued before handing the remote control over to Mike. “Happy viewing, Mr Mandelson.”

After the engineer left, Mike sat down on his sofa and marvelled at all the options he had at his fingertips, glad that he had the week off work so he could sit and enjoy watching football the entire time.

Choosing to view replays of the F.A. Cup final matches, Mike started at the first one that was available, the one from 1970, and pretty much lost the whole day, only really stopping to get something to eat in the early afternoon when his stomach reminded him that he was hungry.
